Is WordPress the Right Choice for Your Business Website?

On this page

WordPress can be a good choice for a business website when your team regularly updates content, publishes projects or writes articles, and maintenance responsibilities are clearly agreed. It also supports a design tailored to your business. If content rarely changes or the website primarily supports a complex business process, other approaches are worth comparing. Base the decision on how you work, the features you need and the total cost of maintenance. The platform alone does not guarantee a fast website, a good Google ranking or more enquiries.

Who will update the content after launch?

WordPress provides tools for drafts, scheduled publishing and different user roles. With appropriate roles, you can arrange for one person to prepare a draft and another to review and publish it. These capabilities are described in the official overview of WordPress features.

Their value depends on whether someone actually uses them. Before deciding, ask the future editor to try three tasks: updating a service, adding a project photograph and publishing an article. The process should be easy to understand, and routine edits should not accidentally disrupt the entire page layout.

WordPress can have a custom design

A ready-made theme is just one way to build a website. WordPress can use a custom theme, custom content types and additional functionality. Choosing WordPress therefore does not mean your website has to look like other websites built with it.

Clarify in the proposal what will be designed for you, what comes from an existing theme and which parts you can edit yourself. Custom design makes sense when it solves a specific problem: making services easier to compare, presenting projects clearly or simplifying the path to getting in touch.

Speed and SEO require testing the actual website

Do not accept a judgement about speed based solely on the platform name. Ask for key pages to be measured with the actual photographs, forms and other features visitors will use. Check loading, responsiveness to touch and layout stability, particularly on a phone.

Google states that Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems, but good results in those reports do not guarantee a top position. This is explained in Google's guidance on page experience. When choosing a solution, also ask for a clear plan for content and technical checks, rather than a promise that the platform itself is an “SEO solution”.

When should you consider a static website, another CMS or an application?

The following table is a starting point for discussion. Needs can overlap, so the same project may have more than one viable solution.

Choosing an approach based on everyday tasks
Your needWhat to considerWhat to check
The team publishes content regularlyWordPress or another CMSEditorial roles, review and approval of posts.
A small brochure website with infrequent updatesA static websiteWho makes changes, how they are published and what that costs.
A specific way of editing or organising contentCustomised WordPress or another CMSA trial by the person who will maintain the content.
Accounts, approvals and complex business rulesAn existing system or a web applicationAccess permissions, integrations and future changes to the process.

A static website delivers pages prepared in advance. It can have a separate editing system, so “static” does not have to mean a developer manually makes every change. WordPress can also be extended for more complex tasks. In either case, assess the specific solution, the publishing process and maintenance.

Example: an architecture studio publishing new work

Imagine a studio that adds a completed project once a month. One person prepares the description and photographs, and another approves publication. This is a hypothetical example, not a description of one of our clients.

WordPress can be a reasonable choice for this workflow: an agreed project template makes it easier to enter material consistently. If the studio later wants a space where clients can review confidential drawings and approve versions, that requirement should be assessed separately. The entire public website does not have to change platforms; connecting it to a suitable system is another option to consider.

Agree on maintenance before development

Ask for the proposal to identify who is responsible for updates, backups and checking important features. The WordPress update instructions recommend making a backup beforehand so the website can be restored if a problem occurs.

Also clarify ownership of account access, licence renewals and what happens if you change providers. The initial price does not tell you how easy the website will be to edit a year from now.

For a discussion about website development, prepare a list of regular updates and essential features. If you already have a website, also review the checks for preserving SEO signals during a redesign. Then compare solutions against the way you work.
